BIOGAS THRACE
OUR STORY
Biogas Thrace S.A. is created by a team of experts with large experience in the renewable energy sector after carefully observing the increasing energy demands, the increasing needs for sustainable and environmentally friendly large industries residual or livestock and farming wastes disposal. The company owns 3 licenses of capacity 3MW each, for power production from biogas and develops 3 more of 3MW each.
OUR AIM & VISION
-
Our Aim is for Biogas Thrace S.A. to become one of the largest Green Energy and Biomethane producers in Greece through the use of Renewable Resources and more specifically, through the use of agricultural and livestock wastes and industrial residuals.
-
Our Vision is to play a significant role in Greece’s course towards a sustainable, environmentally friendly future and power autonomy produced by the use of “green” sources.
OUR PHILOSOPHY
Our Philosophy is orientated on working for a Sustainable Green Energy producing business with special attention on the environmental, economic and social impacts that this business creates. Understanding the effects a company has on society and the environment is vital to achieving sustainability. The Positive Social Impact of our company’s biogas plants is acknowledged by the local communities since the supply of the required quantity of agricultural waste requires related cultivation of approx. 2.300-2.500 ha and approximately 1.000 farmers will be employed in the locations of the 3 plants. An amount of approximately 6,5m€ per year shall be injected to the local villages during the plants’ 20-year operation. The farmers have the ability to alternate their cultivations also with other agricultural products such as sunflower, wheat, oat, barley, beets etc. and they can also benefit from Contract Farming available financial tools. In addition, the Biogas plants are able to dispose to the farmers, organic fertilizer (as a sub-product of the production process) thus composing a complete Circle of Wastes Circulation with zero environmental effect. The plants may also use livestock and farming wastes as well as industrial residuals providing an environmentally friendly solution to a difficult disposing issue.
OUR TECHNOLOGY
01 / CULTIVATION
The supply of the required quantity of agricultural waste requires a related cultivation of approximately 2.300-2.500 ha and approx. 1.000 farmers will be employed in those locations of the 3 plants. The Biogas plants are able to dispose to the farmers, organic fertilizer (as a sub-product of the production process) thus composing a complete Circle of Wastes Circulation with zero environmental effect. The plants may also use livestock and farming wastes as well as industrial residuals providing an environmentally friendly solution to a difficult disposing issue.
The required materials for the plants’ operation is secured through long-term contracts.
The whole process is supervised by high-quality personnel with advanced know-how composed by specialized agronomists and professors of the Forestry Sciences of the Agricultural University of Athens the Democritus University of Thrace located in the city of Orestiada.
02 / FERMENTATION & DIGESTION
Fermentation and Digestion processes are being performed by high-quality equipment originating from Austria and Germany, two of the most recognized related equipment producing countries, and by a highly reputable equipment producer with certified and proven successful technology including SCADA systems. The whole system is characterized by its high level of functionality and ease of maintenance. This is down to the supplier’s many years of experience in the construction and operation of digestion plants and the install of robust plant equipment, including redundant components. This ensures minimal downtimes, even when performing servicing and maintenance activities.
03 / POWER PRODUCTION
The Power Production process includes the use of highly reputable and worldwide recognized equipment with efficiencies reaching 90% or more with CHP. That’s more than 40% higher than with thermal energy alone. The equipment’s high quality, proven technology and guaranteed production have been tested and certified in a large number of plants in operation around the world.
04 / WASTE MANAGEMENT
The Biogas plants are able to dispose to farmers, pure organic liquid fertilizer (as a sub-product of the production process) thus composing a complete Circle of Wastes Circulation with zero environmental effect. The Plants may also use livestock and farming wastes as well as industrial residuals providing an environmentally friendly solution to a difficult disposing issue. In addition, the excess waste heating produced by the Plants may be used either by the Plants themselves for the production of organic fertilizer or can be exploited by greenhouses, for the cultivation of algae etc.
POWER PLANTS

BIOGAS THRACE III
3MW CAPACITY, 24GWh/y
Location: Keramos, Orestiada Municipality, Evros Prefecture
The Plant is Ready-to-Build, the PPA (for 20 years) is signed and the Grid Connection point has been constructed and ready to receive connection.
The choice of locations for the development of the project was based on a number of considerations that are of critical importance to both the construction and the operation of the project.
The main advantages of these positions are:
-
The region has very large areas suitable for the obtainment of agricultural waste and abundant water supply.
-
The project is fully acceptable to the local community after recognizing the important benefits that this investment shall create for the wider area.
-
The three biogas plants are located in close proximity to the MV network that is able of accepting the power generated. This means there is no need to build a new 20/150KV elevating substation, which would impose additional costs and delays.
-
The land sites selected for construction of the projects are almost flat, so large-scale excavation works are not required before construction of the plants.
-
There is easy access to the sites in question.
-
Water is readily available through groundwater well drilling.
-
The distance between the plant locations is approximately 10km, which permits shared use of specialist personnel at the three plants.
-
The sites are all very close to a Railway Station (3-23km), and close to a large Port (115km).
